Independence: Founding of the nation

Like a dozen other post-communist countries, Pridnestrovie declared its independence in 1990. Later, in a nationwide referendum, the inhabitants of the country voted to reaffirm Pridnestrovie's independence and rejected efforts to join neighboring Moldova.
Pridnestrovie and a new dawn
Independence 2 September 1990: A new dawn for Pridnestrovie.
Pridnestrovskaia Moldavskaia Respublica bases its existence on four factors: Self-determination, its separate history, its actual distinctiveness, and on the official nullification of Hitler's and Stalin's secret World War II pact. For more on that, click here. As a truly multiethnic nation, it's independence was a result of standing up for minority rights and self-determination in the face of ethnic genocide. As the Soviet Union crumbled, the former MSSR dissolved back into its two former parts on the basis of the previous natural border separating the two.

Unique Pridnestrovian identity transcends ethnic lines
Historically separate, Moldova and Pridnestrovie are "different" and "distinct" in the words of the United Nations. And the OSCE recognizes Pridnestrovie's separate "identity going beyond ethnic lines".
Flag, PMR
Flag of freedom
Although not accepting Pridnestrovie's freedom, its neighbor Moldova today exists based on a unilateral declaration which proclaimed Stalin's forced WWII-merger of Moldova and Pridnestrovie to be "null and void". Pridnestrovie's existence follows the requirements of international law and, as such, is independent of recognition by its larger neighbor or other states. Each year on Independence Day, 2 September, Pridnestrovians celebrate that they themselves are responsible for creating the future.
